Jewellery Making - Amethyst & Peridot Sets

Last month I went to the city to get my passport renewed. That experience in itself will require a whole post - but that's for another time. When I was there at the VFS agency, they closed for an hour for lunch, so I decided to stroll around to pass the time. Being in NYC, you don't need to think twice about how to spend your time.

While browsing the street idly, I came across this store with loads and loads of gem stones, beads, crystals chains etc etc. Whatever one might need to make any kind of jewellery, you name it and it was there! I was hooked. That day I made a mental note to come back and try my hand at jewellery making.

Sometime last year, I had picked up a jewellery making kit that came with a set of things including designs to make a few pairs of earrings. I went ahead and invested in a tool kit for the same and made  a few earrings. I loved it. I got a few complements on wearing those earrings too :) So, naturally, when I came across the above mentioned store, I just had to go in and buy some stuff! It was like an itch that wouldn't go away till I had loosened my purse strings.

I don't know if it was the tired state I was in, or my preoccupation with getting the passport renewed, I managed to get out of the store with my money intact! But this week, I went back to collect my passport and I just could not let the opportunity pass! So, I went back to the store and picked up a few things.

I felt like a kid at a candy store, I wanted to pick everything there. But I practiced extreme self restraint (gave myself a major pat on the back for that one!) and just picked up gem stones to make 2 sets of earrings and matching necklaces - one with amethyst and one with peridot. I thought, let me try out this much, if they turn out fine, I could always sketch some more patterns and then go shopping again.

Finding the appropriate hooks, clasps, string materials and findings was a challenge in itself - the sheer variety and quantity was overwhelming. My friend suggested satin ribbons instead of chains for the necklace. I was skeptical at first, but then decided to give it a try - must say they look good, even if I do say so myself :). I also found these cute organza and satin drawstring cinch gift bags at the same store that were just right for packing the jewellery in.

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, it is Teacher's Appreciation week at my son's school. Today was "Personal Gift" day, wherein you could gift something to the teachers. This was a perfect chance for me. So I made these two sets and gifted them to his class teachers. I hope they enjoy wearing them as much as I did making them!
